2. After watching:
a) Try to complete the following paragraph to summarize the story you have just seen.
Thessa was starting to
organize her birthday party and had decided to invite only …………………….., but she
forgot to ……………………………………… As a result, the invitation went viral and 15,000
people confirmed that they would ………………………party.
Police ……………… the family home, there was no
violence and only a few people were ……………….. Thessa ……………… seen at the party.
b) Check your answers.
c) Now, watch again and try to put these sentences in the right order.
Within
hours of the party being announced on Facebook, 15,000 people had promised to
come.
And
the 16 year old, known only as Thessa realized her private party had mistakenly
been listed as a public event.
Police
cordoned off the family home but the atmosphere remained good-natured.
“There
is nothing we can do about this, if the situation stays calm and peaceful we’ll
be happy.”
It
looked more like a summer music festival than a surburban birthday party - and
all thanks to the power of social media.
“It’s a lot of fun to be here even though
nobody knows one another.”
A cancellation notice was ignored and more than
a thousand complete strangers turned up to celebrate.
Local residents can only shrug their shoulders.
Perhaps wisely Thessa herself was nowhere to be
seen but even though she missed her own birthday party it’s not likely to be
one she’ll forget.
We are estimating that there are approximately
1,400 people gathered here. There hasn’t been any major violence though but
some people have suffered a few injuries.
Others sang songs and chanted her name.
d) In gropus of 4, answer the following questions, then share your reflections with the other groups.
What was Thessa's mistake?
How could she have avoided what happened?
Do you think this could have happened to you or anyone you know? Why?
How could you improve your privacy in social networking sites?
